Ok, this is going to happen, soon as I find an example of how to get a thumbnail to show up in an RSS viewer.  Does anyone know of an example of a feed (that doesn't use feedburner) that shows images?

I've looked at a lot of guides and specifications but can't find out the "proper" way to do it.

Any guidance?

Well, nevermind, I figured it out.  Put a basic rss feed up on the svn at
\com_rsgallery2_legacy\trunk\site\templates\rss_feed

Shows newest from last 3 days, needs a lot of work but the core is there and works in Outlook and few others I tested.  Shows thumbnails in the feed too!
